Technological comparison for creating avatars for collaborative VR applications. Student research paper.

Input Picture

Virtual reality applications are increasingly being used in vehicle development processes to take advantage of immersive visualization. In addition to the simple display of content, this also includes collaboration with colleagues from different locations. These colleagues should be represented by their personal avatars to increase recognition and social interaction. Therefore, the goal of this work is to investigate different approaches for the (semi-)automated creation of 3D avatars and to compare them on the basis of previously defined criteria.

The study included a method comparison, a weighed comparison, and self-experiments. Self-experiments are based on a consistent input picture (left) and have been applied to Metahuman, Character Creator, and Ready Player Me.
